The Rundown on Apple TV
The big news today at Macworld was the Apple iPhone, but we also got the specs on the Apple TV (nee iTV), to be available next month. Jackson has already declared it “the leader of the pack.”
The brick has 720p high def, a 40 GB harddrive (stores 50 hours of video), 802.11 (b, g, and n), and Intel processor, and is designed for widescreen TVs. Users can auto-sync downloads from one computer and stream (not store) from five computers. Jacks for power, USB 2, ethernet, Wi-Fi, HDMI, et cetera. It will cost $299. You can play movies and music, show photos, and stream things like trailers.
The devices are sure to hold a lot of content that’s not from iTunes, but as of today you can also buy Paramount (in addition to Disney) movies on iTunes. Apple CEO Steve Jobs reported 2 billion songs, 50 million shows, and 1.3 million movies sold on iTunes to date.

Does it play DivX/XviD files, too? I know those are playable on Front Row with the proper plug-in/codec installed, but will this do the same?
Wasn’t mentioned at the keynote. I will ask next time I go to the exhibit hall.
How does the external hard drive via usb function? Does it appear as a traditional NAS, can I write to it? Or am I only able to stream content from the attached external drive to my computer?
Talked to one of the Apple employees demoing the device on the floor and he said “anything you can play on iTunes, you can play on Apple TV.” I pressed him further, asking about wireless downloads, and he said to think of the device like an iPod. So then I asked what about the new iPod, the iPhone? He said you can do anything you could do with a computer with an iPhone.
I’d definitely buy one if it could replace my tivo. It doesn’t sound like it can play normal (much less HD) TV though :(
Does the Apple TV Work at all on a standard (4:3) Screen? Does it work on a standard definition TV as well. If anyone knows, post the answer. PLEASE.
