Whither Ze Frank?

Ze Frank, whose top-notch year-long videoblog ends in two months, has been busy making plans to go Hollywood. The New York Observer gives us the blow-by-blow on his signing with United Talent Agency and embarking on a slew of pitches.

It’s funny, they treat Frank as a sort of idiot savant wandering into the media business. It’s not entirely unfounded, what with the whole wide-eyed not-blinking thing he has going on.

[Frank has] picked up some of that sumptuous industry lingo. “There was a pilot with CBS that almost went to deal, but we had to kind of pull out of that,” said Mr. Frank. The show had been a sitcom with a “tie-in to online space as well.” So Mr. Frank has decided since then to focus on feature films for his first foray into the mainstream. But don’t worry, netizens! He swears he’ll never ditch the Web.

My favorite quote: “How do you value an audience who, when I ask them to dress up their vacuum cleaners, send in 1,000 pictures in 20 hours?”

  1. Given Ze’s popularity with the ’sports racer’ set, one can only hope some clueless studio exec is busy trying to write him into ‘Ricky Bobby 2′ as Will Ferrell’s latest NASCAR rival.

  2. The question is, will Ze go Hollywood or will Hollywood go Ze? The Duckies know.

  3. […] How do you convince talented people to start producing compelling content for distribution online? Not having another option is certainly one way. And if succesful, the creators of the show will reap the benefits over complete ownership of the content and control over how it’s produced. Sure, success online seems to happen as a happy accident, if at all — but hey, it worked for Ze Frank. Topic: Online Video, The Stars Tags: fark “fark tv” “drew curtis” […]

  7. […] I remember when Nick Douglas had just arrived in town from the flyover states, a rube who’d made a snarky name at Blogebrity. With Ze Frank scheduled to self-cancel his popular daily web show this spring, Nick will join all the other hopeful void-fillers. “I’m tired of working for other people,” he tells me. Earlier this week, Nick was nice enough to sit down and chat about the show and the site before it goes live. […]
