Hollywood Disrupted, Indeed

As you scan websites for the choice video moments from Sunday’s Oscars ceremony, you should also take time to peruse Robert Young’s latest missive over on GigaOM, titled Hollywood Disrupted. Clearly over here on NewTeeVee we understand the model of putting creativity into the hands of the audience. The question becomes, will user-generated content someday be celebrated more at events like the Oscars… or will the shifting wave make the Oscars irrelevant?

  1. The only way Hollywood will be truly disrupted depends on how user-generated content matures, and how it can overcome or bypass the stranglehold on distribution channels to generate revenue for a capital intensive business.

I think we’ll see the maturing of the UGC arena start for real in 2007, with projects being created which go beyond ‘viral entertainment’ to challenge Hollywood production.

I hope that A Swarm of Angels http://www.aswarmofangels.com/ – our participative film project based on open source principals (it’s an ‘open movie’) – will be one of them, as we move from 100s to 1000s of subscribers/participators.
