Pixelodeon: Online Video Fest in L.A.

I spoke with Steve Woolf and Zadi Diaz today about their plans for an online video film festival, Pixelodeon, which will be hosted at the American Film Institute’s screening rooms in Los Angeles on June 9th and 10th. Blip.tv recently held their own screening of online video in New York City, further indication that the lines between distribution formats are blurring — since, ultimately, motion pictures are motion pictures.

Other organizers include pals Jay Dedman, Ryanne Hodson and Irina Slutsky, who say the show is not about connections, but highlighting the participation and audience involvement that online video fosters. “A wiki is up on the site, and we want the public to submit themes for our curators,” said Zadi. “In the coming weeks they will also be able to submit videos for consideration so we cast as wide a net as possible.”

You won’t even have to be in LA to check it out, as all the programming will be available online. So why screen it in a theater at all? “So [vloggers] can mingle with producers, people who have the resources to take your work to the next level,” Steve suggested. Both of them were adamant that this is not about breaking into ‘the industry,’ but a showcase of how online video has emerged as a viable medium in its own right.
