iPod-to-TV: The DLO HomeDock

What on earth took this so long? The DLO HomeDock Deluxe costs $150, has S-Video and Composite video out and a remote control so you can browse your library from your couch. This means you don’t have to give your TV the ‘RCA cable reacharound‘ every time you want to plug your video iPod in, and it will charge and update while you’re viewing.

Yes, the video displayed on your TV will be in standard definition, unlike the Apple TV’s (possibly HDCP hobbled) hi-def HDMI support. But it’s also half the price, and with an 80GB iPod, twice the storage of an Apple TV. So if you’ve already got an iPod video and are tired of waiting for the Apple TV to ship, or leery of Apple’s track record on initial release hardware, this seems like the way to go.

  2. Nice device. This is a very interesting space–devices that help move download content into the family room. Users over at hungryflix.com are looking for ways to watch our films on their TVs. This is a nice choice over Apple TV, especially for the bedroom where you may not have an HDTV yet.
