Where to Find Fresh Video: Pageflakes

Pageflakes, which makes customizable start pages, let us know it will be formally launching a whole bunch of video-related widgets Wednesday. The tools will help you create a web page that automatically updates with searches on your favorite video sites and keywords, so you can access it from any computer to get a personalized snapshot of fresh video.

San Francisco-based Pageflakes has put together a “universal video search” widget, which appears to be making use of AOL’s SearchVideo, powered by that company’s purchase of Truveo. Annoyingly, the widget opens up videos in a new tab or window rather than playing them within the page (and with my browser settings, forcibly resizes my window too!).

The search results widget is similar to ClipRoller, a startup we recently wrote about, but is a lot further along in terms of design and breadth of results.

Pageflakes has also built widgets specifically for Google Video, Dailymotion, Metacafe, Revver, and YouTube. Here’s a good example of a customized page that makes use of the video widgets, compiling a variety of web resources about newly released movies. This is nothing earth-shattering, but it’s a handy tool.

Pageflakes has funding from Benchmark Capital and recently brought on the former head of My Yahoo, Dan Cohen, as its CEO.

  3. Good feedback from Liz on the video playback in our Universal Video Search Flake. I too would prefer the video to play right in the Flake, and it’s in the works. In the meantime, all of our other video Flakes play videos right in the Flake.
