YouTube Rewards Users with Statuettes
YouTube, aligning itself with the indie creators who it’s nurtured rather than the pro creators who are suing it, will launch the YouTube Video Awards Monday (link not live as of Sunday night), according to various reports.
The site has picked nominees in seven categories: most creative, most inspirational, best series, best comedy, musician of the year, best commentary, and most adorable, inviting users to vote all this week. Trophies will be handed out next week, though not in an in-person awards ceremony.
Nominees include geriatric1927, Terra Naomi, Chad Vader, Lonelygirl15, LisaNova, Renetto, Barats and Bereta, Smosh, Ask a Ninja, and OK Go. Statuettes might not be the promised rev-share agreements many contributors would like to see, but maybe the winners can sell them on eBay.
Eric Auchard of Reuters makes a good point:
In a sense, the nature of online voting makes YouTube’s ceremony anachronistic. YouTube already relies on a ratings system to track the viewing habits of its fans and constantly promotes the most popular videos on its site.
Update: Marshall Kirkpatrick of SplashCast sent over a player containing all the nominees (embedded above).

So many places to see top videos out there. YT should have a lot of attention for this new contest. Here are some of the greatest Internet videos out there:

Oh thank god, Mr. IVS, that you have brought the Numa Numa Guy to my attention. Please wrap more ads around your collection of videos– they are just as entertaining as the videos themselves!
You should make another site devoted to webcam girls– that stuff is just primed for the bigtime!!
Just as I was thinking, “Man, this is a lot of treacle for any one person to digest,” Schlomo shows up and cuts the mood with some delicious irony. Thank you, Schlomo!
Hey,a vote for me is like a vote for Schlomo, if he were balder, Scottisher (is that a word?) and more YouTubey.
Seriously – Markdaycomedy for “best commentary”.
Because he’ll never, ever claim, “if you don’t the terrorists win…”
Wow – IVS is like a cornucopia of Creative Commons violations!
