State of the NTV: TV Guide, the Onion
Here’s some fresh online video news to get your week started right:
TV Guide talking more about its online video search tool (previously mentioned here), due next month.
“Everybody says, `Who’s going to be the TV Guide of online video?’ and we say, why shouldn’t it be us?” said Richard Cusick, senior vice president of digital media at Gemstar-TV Guide. “We’re making a bet, but we think it’s a safe bet and consistent with our mission.”
vod:pod, which we’ve given a few shout-outs to recently due to its help with our redesign, launches its first version of a web-based feed reader for video today. This looks to be a welcome upgrade to YouTube’s subscriptions feature, bringing in any RSS feed with video enclosures (or at least that’s the idea; video feeds can apparently be quite finicky).
The tool includes what vod:pod nicknamed “the Scoble feature” — a.k.a keyboard shortcuts j and k for next and previous, respectively — named after the text and video blogger who is an outspokenly avid Google Reader user.
The Onion News Network (preview below) reportedly debuts Tuesday. Can’t wait.
Also, Acceptable.TV aired its premiere on VH1 Friday. Did you see it? What did you think?

That is interesting that TV Guide wants to move into the online market that way.
If you think about it, that is pretty much the only way they are going to survive because quite frankly, even though I subscribe to their print magazine for regular television, I don’t even open it. Sometimes it goes straight from the mailbox to the recycle bin. I would rather use the Guide Plus features on my television to figure out what is coming on when.
TV Guide will have a lot of catching up to do if they are going to out do Google and You Tube for being a directory of online video. Not to mention Apple’s iTunes store. These sites already have built in directories so TV Guide had better be really good to survive.
