Its interesting that people are just picking on ideas like this, ISTR peercast has supported random access p2p streaming for the past 5 years or so.

Looking at their Yellow Pages (http://yp.peercast.org) it looks like its only really the Japanese channels that are taking advantage of it though. Shame..

The iPlayer is a Kontiki-based service, provisionally approved but it received a fair bit of mixed public consultation feedback I understand. Who knows when a release is due - I think some of the UI work might have just gone out to pitch again.

Sounds like this new R&D box will be just as neat as the Promise.TV one without the large storage overhead as it can pull on a private BT network (which share files much quicker than your regular demonoids of the world). The beeb might not make boxes, but lots of other people do.

After the rocking Channel4/4OD kontiki launch, one would think it always good to have a back up plan.

How does this compare to the BBC iPlayer that was been talked about a couple of months ago:
http://www.webtvwire.com/bbc-iplayer-bbc-gives-green-light-on-internet-tv-service/

It sounds like the same thing except using a network of DVRs rather than the BBC website.
