An the ability of OUs IT staff to enforce such a policy is without question, right?

Keep in mind OU is also notorious for the biggest student personal data leak ever. This is a back and forth battle that can't be won. The IT administration may win a round but the kids will fight back.

In the end this certainly won't remembered as a victory for 19th C copyright laws over new technology.

Indeed, if it has a place in history it will merely for a short term boost in frognet [local ISP] subscriptions!

Go bobcat hackers!

Universities maybe trying to limit the amount of data being transferred around their networks but many of the newer p2p protocols are network aware and attempt to keep as much data in a domain as possible .

Unfortunately Bittorrent and Gnutella are not very network aware and grab data from peers wherever they can costing Universites carriage costs across their network

There are many legitimate uses for p2p and companies like Joost or Peer Impact may be disadvantaged because of Copyright infringers .
