MeTV Play Kyte.tv Grabs More VC Cash

The MeTV trend — broadcast yourself to your friends and family (or anyone for that matter) is beginning to attract the attention of the venture capital community.

decentral.tv, the San Francisco-based company that offers Kyte.tv (one of the early entrants into the MeTV business), has raised fresh capital from the Swiss telecom operator Swisscom, European super angel Klaus Hommels, and Holtzbrinck Ventures, the venture arm of one of Germany’s leading media companies. The Swisscom investment shouldn’t come as a surprise; Swisscom Mobile is already offering kyte.tv.

Kyte.tv had raised $2.25 million earlier from investors that include Atomico (co-founded by Niklas Zennström), Draper Fisher Jurveston and Draper Richards (founding investor in Skype). The amount of the current round is unannounced.

In a previous post, Liz described kyte.tv as a “lifecasting service” (a term Justin Kan of Justin.tv tells us he personally coined, BTW).

Users snap a video (or a photo) with their camera/video phone and then send an email with the attached file to their Kyte account, and a few seconds later the video is transcoded and playing on your channel for all to see. If you do have a compatible phone (or live outside the U.S.) you’ll be able to do cool things like life-streaming, where your phone takes a picture at a set interval and broadcasts it on your account — a real-life stop-motion film.

  • One of the big things about kyte that separates it from other similar sites, is definitely the mobile feature. You don’t have to be on a computer to upload media, you can be literally anywhere in the world! (as long as you have service)

You can also see new things that your friends posted and chat with them directly from your phone!
