Jackson, thanks, I've always loved the story of Farnsworth, and appreciate you mentioning Veracifier (as well as our friends at AiB, Ryan is Hungry, and Holy Land TV -- I'd also add Minnesota Stories to that list). When we started Veracifier, we talked about the way news used to be run within the broadcast networks, and wanted very much to bring back that idea of having important programming in the mix.

The interesting thing is that it doesn't have to be a loss leader anymore - there are advertisers who want to reach Veracifier's audience, and can pay enough to support what we do there. There are also grants available in the space, something people who want to do meaningful video online should be considering. Luckily, we have attracted some capital, and can focus on building that audience right now.

Nice piece, Jackson, thanks for including the link to the "Secret" piece I put up on YouTube.

BTW, and FYI, Mrs. Farnsworth's nickname was PEM, with an "e", not Pam.

She was quite a lady... carried the torch right up until the very end. And still there are some who would douse her flame if they could.

-PS

Don't get me wrong, I've got nothing against boobs. But for instance, even back in Farnsworth's day, broadcast news was considered a loss leader and 'prestige' programming in the public interest. Now, networks demand profitability from it, for better or worse (I say worse).

What I see the problem with online video is that the only financially rewarding stuff to produce is often light on the intellectual side. There's nothing wrong with giving people what they want, but there needs to be some balance in terms of making people think, as well.

And I'm not talking about the voyeuristic appeal of cam-phone footage from disasters, either -- while compelling, it doesn't add anything particularly substantial to even coverage other than as an eye-witness account.

Off the top of my head, Alive in Baghdad, Veracifer, Ryanne is Hungry, Holy Land TV, Ebb and Flow are thought-provoking, newsy and in-depth projects, but they are well in the minority and certainly not attracting capital like lighter fare.

Nice job Jackson, it makes you think way back about the changes in mass communication that have occurred.

But don't you think that the growing piles of sketch comedy (and boobs) are giving more people content that actually is worth watching and relevant, if only to them?

See, this is a case of one man's trash is another man's treasure. I spend hours every day sifting through so much online video (mostly sketch comedy, as it is my passion) and I love it. Sure, there's a lot of crap out there -- but you can find some real gems if you just do some searching.

I know he's rolling over in his grave with the thought of French Maid TV but if you want to enjoy the whole story before the movie comes out be sure to read, The Last Lone Inventor. There are used copies available for 76 cents http://www.amazon.com/Last-Lone-Inventor-Genius-Television/dp/0066210690
