Facebook Diaries Launches
(Originally published Wednesday night.) We’re told that Facebook will be launching its joint project with Comcast’s Ziddio, Facebook Diaries, at about 9 p.m. tonight. The eight-episode weekly series spotlights topics like heartbreak, road trip, and wild nights, with pilot episode “Who Am I” already queued up at http://www.facebook.com/diaries.
Facebook has been playing around with the project for a while now since announcing it in February, even shooting some of its own video, but the series will be completely user-contributed clips, with editing and motion graphics by producer R.J. Cutler of Actual Reality Pictures.
We’d heard trials of the show were already available from Comcast’s VOD platform, but hadn’t yet checked it out for ourselves. Clips are hosted at Ziddio, though in the six months since announcing Facebook Diaries, Facebook launched a video upload service of its own.
From what I’ve seen, the show propagates what I’d call the “old Facebook,” with college-aged members sharing personal stories with each other. No old-fogey coattail-riders in sight (no offense, greater Silicon Valley)! To be sure, in keeping with Facebook’s more public and open initiatives of late, the show is aiming for wide distribution through the social network as well as on cable television.
Randi Zuckerberg, a two-time NewTeeVee Pier Screenings runner-up (and sister of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg), is one of leaders on project.
