Comcast Gets Friendly with BuddyTV?
Has Comcast (CMCSA) acquired BuddyTV, a TV news, commentary, and community site? That’s what Joseph Weisenthal at paidContent says. We haven’t received a response to a request for comment on the topic from the company — though we have to wonder why CEO Andy Liu was unusually unresponsive to an unrelated email we sent him last week.
Seattle-based BuddyTV, which competes with sites like CNET’s (CNET) TV.com, was funded by Charles River Ventures and Gemstar-TV Guide International (GMST), to the tune of about $3 million. In a related deal, Bravo acquired Television Without Pity, a snark-filled television recap site, for an undisclosed amount in March.
BuddyTV employs writers and hosts TV-obsessed members forums and groups, like you might expect. It also offers a platform for users (called “TVj’s”) to build their own names as commenters and gossipers by sharing live commentary while a show airs.
paidContent speculates,
It seems likely that BuddyTV will be used in conjunction with Comcast’s Fancast.com site, as well as Fandango, which it acquired in the earlier this year.
