While we're not seeing much 1.5mbps video being distributed today, I think it's correct to use about that encoding rate if we're discussing mass consumption of television programming via the Internet in the 2010 timeframe. Yes, wavelet-based compression research is promising and we'll see derivitaives of h.264 and VC-1 that further improve video compression -- but not but huge factors in the near term. At the same time, last-mile broadband speeds continue to increase and higher production value content is moving to the net -- just two factors that will continue to drive the adoption of higher-bitrate encodes. If we're appraising the Internet landscape of 2010, I think Mr. Leinwand's numbers are about right.

kam-RA - I was referring to the "near-DVD" formats used by companies such as Move Networks and Grid Networks. Admittedly, I'm not an expert on these formats, but this file size is approximately the size I've been told by a few expert sources. And, perhaps more to your point, I am specifically not talking about Flash, as I personally don't believe that format is going to be acceptable the the average TV audience and help a given program garner an additional Nielsen rating point.

In the article, you write:

Using today’s encoding techniques, an hour of video content equates to around 850 megabytes of data.

I find that odd since we produce a show every day that is 60 minutes long but only outputs 350MB of data using a 750kbps Flash file. What format uses over 2x as much? If it's HD content, it would have been nice if that was properly specified.
