TV Guide Announces Online Award Noms
TV Guide announced today the nominees for its Online Video Awards, with traditional media networks and stars permeating each of the 18 categories. I guess that’s why the magazine isn’t called NewTeeVee Guide.
Just as TV Guide is broadening its online video guide, it could have broadened its horizons a little bit beyond Steve Carrell and Will Ferrell. Thank God for Chad Vader and Lonelygirl, otherwise it would have been a shut-out.
Here are the nominees:
Funniest Web Video (a.k.a LOL Award)
The Landlord (FunnyOrDie)
Dick in a Box (NBC)
The Star-Spangled Banner (JibJab)
Water Boardin’ USA (My Damn Channel)
Best Original Web Drama Series
- Sam has Seven Friends (Samhas7friends)
- Prom Queen (PromQueen.tv)
- Sanctuary (SanctuaryForAll)
- Lonelygirl15 (LG15.com)
Best Original Web Comedy Series
- Clark & Michael (ClarkandMichael)
- Derek & Simon (SuperDeluxe)
- Illeanarama: Supermarket of the Stars (YouTube)
- Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager (YouTube)
Best TV Show Site on the Web
- Lost (ABC)
- Heroes 360 (NBC)
- Jericho (CBS)
- American Idol (Fox)
Best Comedy Site on the Web

What do you think of the nominees? Does the overwhelming presence of traditional media surprise you? Who should have gotten nominated, but didn’t? Tell us what you think in the comments.

[...] no fault of the voters, who cast some 1.75 million ballots — the nominees were skewed towards established media outlets, so it’s natural that the winners would be, too. Even [...]

I think Tiki Bar TV, Ask A Ninja and Getting Away with Murder should see some love.
Where is Satacracy 88? Hopefully Ask A Ninja, and Tiki Bar TV win some things… but over all it’s a non-indie adventure.
At least they’re not calling them “webisodes”.
Bill: actually they do call them webisodes on tvguide’s site.
while i think its interesting you’re covering this, you’ve missed some of the more interesting news coming out of tvguide.com. they recently officially launched their online video guide, which is focused on professional content. its actually quite good and a step up from the unfocused approach of truveo, google video, etc, while being seemingly as comprehensive from a professionally generated content perspective. i recommend checking it out.
Absolutely ridiculous. The only one of those that’s terribly funny is The Landlord, and that was done by a seasoned professional. Shame on you TV Guide.
Ask A Ninja should definitely be in the running. He’s original, with the times and lives for the Web. Why hasn’t anyone started ask a pirate?
MJ – how do they decide what is “professional” and what is not? While I applaud their focus, this exclusivity doesn’t work for the 18-34 year-old demographic whom now have the individual power to decide what they want to watch, when they want it, and where they want it..
Frank: i totally agree – there is no clear dividing line, hence why they also highlight top viral videos. i guess the point is if you’re looking for a “filter” or a “guide” this is one option.
Rob: i agree w/you on the funniest videos category – none of them made me laugh out loud.
Hey All,
Good discussion. So let’s pose this question. In your version of an online video awards show — what would be the categories, and who would be the nominees?
The Vloggies were good last year (disclosure: I am biased, as mefeedia received 2 Vloggies). I plan on going to the Winnies this year. :)
Awards shows are political by nature. I’m sure we will see all kinds of “Best of 2007″ awards shows in the coming months. For now, the more the merrier as it just brings more and more attention to online video and away from the TV. :)
