Even More Funding for Video Startups: VMIX, Fora.tv
Online video startup VMIX has raised $16.5 million as part of its second-round funding, according to a regulatory filing uncovered by Private Equity Hub. That news come less than 24 hours after we wrote about fresh funding for video startups Vitrue, Skinkers, and Imagine Communications. At this point, it’s almost redundant to call it a trend.
We haven’t written much about San Diego-based VMIX in the past because we’ve been confused by its positioning — is it a user-generated video site, a community for filmmakers, a white-label video service, or a premium content licenser? At various times we’ve been told all of the above, and as you can see from the screenshot below, the messaging is still, shall we say, multi-pronged.
paidContent indicates the company raised $5.5 million earlier this year as part of the same round, which now totals some $22 million from ATA Ventures, JK&B Capital, Mission Ventures, and Enterprise Partners. So this makes about $26 million in total funding for VMIX; Om had written at GigaOM that the company’s first round, taken in 2006, amounted to $4 million.
Elsewhere, TechCrunch reports that Fora.tv has raised some $2 million from Will Hearst III and Adobe Ventures. However, we’re not sure how much of that round is new, as the San Francisco-based startup has been touting Hearst’s financial involvement since it came on the scene in January.
