Holiday Gift Ideas for Your Favorite Videoblogger

Not sure what to get that lonely videoblogger in your life for the upcoming holidays? NewTeeVee has rounded up a collection of goodies the YouTubers of your world probably don’t have.

Justin.tv Kit Justin.tv kitDynamism has teamed up with Justin.tv to offer the whole lifecasting shebang in one, painful, $2,500 installment. Most of that price tag can be attributed to the Sony VAIO with the “enhanced” battery, but the kit also includes the Logitech Quickcam and dorky nifty Targus backpack. The key here is the VAIO, which weighs less than three pounds and has a built-in Sprint cellular WAN card, allowing your lifecasting gift recipient to wander the cell-service-covered tracts of the world for all to see. You can probably save a little dough buying these pieces separately; we recommend getting the Voltaic’s backpack (below) instead of the Targus. Buy here.

Voltaic Backpack Backpack Battery power is definitely the limiting factor for the road warrior videoblogger. Voltaic’s backpack says it kicks out four watts of power; with one hour of direct sunlight the bag is supposed to give you three hours of iPod playback or one-and-a-half hours of cell talk time. Our editor, Liz, has been toting her blogging gear around in the Voltaic’s solar-powered bag for a few months now and has recommended it to the GigaOM team. And as an added bonus, it will encourage your often-nocturnal videoblogger to go out and get some much-needed vitamin D. Buy here.

ATC 2K Action Cam Oregon Scientific If the videoblogger in your life is a little too extreme to be lugging around a backpack full of electronics, they might like Oregon Scientific’s ATC 2K Action Cam. Recording at a respectable 640 X 480 VGA at 30 frames per second, the camera allows for SD card expansion, ensuring plenty of room and no skips as your would-be Warren Miller bombs down the slopes. Make sure they upload their best tricks and worst spills to the ATC2K site. Helmet and life insurance not included. Buy here.

Gorillapod Gorillapod While the Blair Witch-style handicam has become a hallmark of the online video world, steady, carefully framed shots are often preferred. But tripods are big, clunky, and a hassle to setup. Enter Gorillapod — a flexible tripod that will sit, hang or cling to pretty much anything. Designed to support SLRs with monstrously large lenses, the gorillapod is plenty strong for even your beefier camcorders. Available in multiple sizes and colors, no traveling photographer should be without one. Buy here.

iRobot ConnectR iRobot I have been desperately trying to get my hands on one of iRobot’s forthcoming ConnectR robots. Designed for “virtual visiting,” the bots have a webcam and microphone that stream video across the Internet. Marketed to connect far-flung relatives, the robot allows the virtual visitor to move the robot around and see how the family’s ankles are doing. Not slated for release until next year, make sure you sign up your robot-loving voyeur for iRobot’s pilot program.

Wi-Fi T-Shirt wi-fi t-shirt Let your videoblogger know when there’s Wi-Fi about so they can stop what they’re doing and upload their latest video creation. The glowing, animated shirt displays the signal strength of 802.11b or 802.11g wafting through the air. Machine washable and 100 percent cotton, aside from the circuitry bits, the shirt runs on three AAA batteries. And while some sizes might be on backorder now, ThinkGeek promises they’ll be shipping before Nov. 30. Buy here.
