Studios’ “Groundbreaking” Offer Rejected
Looks like the striking WGA writers and Hollywood studios still don’t see eye to eye. The Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers offered up a fresh proposal addressing the new media concerns of the WGA, including what it called “groundbreaking moves.” The WGA rejected the offer, calling it a “massive rollback.”
Each side is in full spin mode.
From the AMPTP:
The AMPTP today unveiled a New Economic Partnership to the WGA, which includes groundbreaking moves in several areas of new media, including streaming, content made for new media and programming delivered over digital broadcast channels. The entire value of the New Economic Partnership will deliver more than $130 million in additional compensation above and beyond the more than $1.3 billion writers already receive each year.
And from the WGA:
On Wednesday we presented a comprehensive economic justification for our proposals. Our entire package would cost this industry $151 million over three years. That’s a little over a 3 percent increase in writer earnings each year, while company revenues are projected to grow at a rate of 10 percent. We are falling behind.
While negotiations have hit a roadblock, at least they haven’t broken off talks altogether. The two sides will resume their discussions on Tuesday.
