New Media Studio Nabs Striking Writers
New media studio Worldwide Biggies has plucked three out-of-work writers from the picket lines to produce a new web series called The Void, according to Reuters.
The three writers are Chris DeLuca, who has written for Saturday Night Live; Jonathan Garbus, who has appeared on Late Night With Conan O’Brien; and Dominic Dierkes, who has written for Spike TV. Worldwide Biggies was founded in 2005 by Albie Hecht, former president of Nickelodeon.
The Void will be a comedy series reminiscent of the the cult classic Kentucky Fried Movie. Distribution for the series hasn’t yet been determined, but the terms of the deal include revenue sharing for the writers, which is good, since money generated by new media is why the writers are striking in the first place.
With the strike set to enter its eighth week and no end in sight, writers are starting to look elsewhere, either by hooking up with existing web studios or starting their own. Funny or Die just got $15 million — maybe the writers should start banging on Will Ferrell’s door.
