This is a great list, but I have to wonder if it is a bad thing? I’m still finding new web series episodes that employ one or more of the above list that I am quite enamored with. Just run through the wiki list of web series here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Web_television_series and you can find pretty popular shows employing the same tools. Clichéd ideas done new can still surprise. For instance, the arguably top web series show now is http://www.watchtheguild.com – loveable nerds, webcams, more? It comes down to the performance and ability of the series to entertain. A viewer can most likely determine if the show is going to work for them within the first few minutes, and it is just like TV. How many cop shows and doctor shows do we need really? But, done right, even those old stories are worth watching again done new.

Wow– you sure do have a lot of respect for the television sitcom– A TV show with no cliches or recycled jokes is a pilot script sitting on the shelf somewhere, probably will never get made… Originality it Television is more of a buzzword than something to strive for, and the shows they label as “original” just recycle the cliche’s or just have really high ratings (think about when they said that “Family Guy” was original) Thinking of ways to use cliche’s in your favor is what good television writing is all about. The number one rule in TV is to keep them from switching the channel is giving them something they’ve all ready seen before and liked… originality is better used for your big Novel or collection of poetry.

Yes, these are more or less common ‘Formats’. As a professional in the industry, I completely agree. However I would like to hear suggestions of new ideas for content. The creators of the mentioned shows feel as if their ideas are original, unique, funny and or interesting – you can’t convince them otherwise. So, I guess re-hashing all that’s overdone in format is only highlighting the problem with the format. Now, what are good ideas for shows?

Omg. This is so true, I’m in the web industry, and tired of seeing the same’ol. I know lonelygirl was popular, but seriously. It’s been done. Try something new fellas! This new web series Karma Kula looks promising. And of course the farscape series isn’t bad. But I just haven’t been too impressed by Sci Fi’s Gemini Devision at all.

Love all these articles about web shows!! Back in 1998 I filmed a little series called Jamie's Way, and now we're doing it all over again with Life After Lisa. The web series is the future of TV- I knew that ages ago!! I'll watch yours if you watch mine ;) Love, Elena
