[...] HD-DVD’s copy protection got cracked a good year ago; Blu-Ray promised Hollywood stronger protection with it’s own BD+ protection scheme. This promise was at least one factor in the industry’s backing of Blu-Ray and thus a nail in HD’s coffin. “Film studios that have switched to Blu-Ray may have crowed a little too early,” comments Slysoft in its press release announcing AnyDVD HD. Companies in the online HD space, on the other hand, couldn’t be happier. Continue reading at Newteevee.com. [...]

[...] Blu-Ray Copy Protection Gets Hacked NEWTEEVEE Sony won’t have much time to celebrate winning the format war against HD DVD: Notorious Antigua-based software maker Slysoft says it’s cracked Blu-Ray’s copy protection. Slysoft’s AnyDVD HD application is now offering unencrypted access to Blu-Ray content, making it possible to back up Blu-Ray discs onto your own hard drive, copy or transcode HD movies and watch them without DRM-compliant hardware, according to a company press release.

AACS, the underlying copy protection on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD has been cracked for a long time. BD+ is extra DRM on top of AACS and had not been fully penetrated prior to this. But not all Blu-Ray titles had used BD+, in fact, only a few had, that's why so much Blu-Ray content is already available to share.

The other point to mention is that both AACS and BD+ (afaik) can be updated, so future films may still have some protection, unlike DVD's after CSS was irevocably cracked. That's not to say all this DRM stuff isn't nonsense, it is, but the studios did learn some things from prior experience.

I was under the impression that Blu Ray has been cracked for quite some time now, due to the proliferation of Blu Ray titles available on torrent networks, and full unencrypted Blu Ray disc images as well.

Is this just the first commercial product available that utilizes it?

Well that didn't take long. Looking forward to being able to chuck all the blu-ray I can stuff onto a media server. Will still buy the discs, but the sooner we are offered downloadable versions with options for backing up the better movies will be. The xbox has helped progress that but we are a little way off yet.

Anywho, be interesting to see the fall out from the protection being cracked.

Absolutely correct, Jody, DRMed downloads can and will get cracked as well. My point was that studios may finally realize that there is no bulletproof solution and rather decide to go with what's most convenient for the consumer ...

Downloads aren't the holy grail of copy protection either. Keep in mind that it's not the media that got cracked, but the files on the media that got cracked. Files on any media can and will be cracked, downloads or not. So to make a big deal with it and noting how downloads are better than Bluray does not give a full assessment of the situation.
