Yahoo: We Have Video Winners, Too!
If you ever wondered how Yahoo found itself in a position to be gobbled up by Microsoft, you only need look at its 2008 Yahoo! Video Awards. Didn’t know that Yahoo was even giving out awards for video? Neither did a lot of folks, we presume, as winners were announced at 5:04 p.m. — last Friday (which was Good Friday), and on the same day that the YouTube Video Award winners were announced.
Maybe it was the lackluster way the Yahoo video blog shared the news:
Without further ado, here are the winners, as of 9:56 am, when I rolled into work:
“Rolled into work?” Is Jeff Spicoli handing out trophies? Oh wait, are there trophies? The blog announcement isn’t specific:
Everyone, both winners and nominees, should expect to hear from us soon, ’cause there are prizes to go around.
My mistake, it’s not Spicoli, but Matthew McConaughey. Regardless, congratulations to the winners, especially The Guild, which continues its Sopranos-like dominance over the world of online video awards, picking up another nod for best series. Here’s a rundown of who won:
- Best Indie Music Video: Terrene: Unwelcome
- Best Animated Video: Weird Al’s Childhood
- Best Non-Fiction Video: Good: Business of Death
- Best New Uploader: DadLabs: Bike Rap
- Best Series: The Guild
- Best Internet Personality: Brigitte Dale: TVSquad Daily
- Best Comedy: The PitNYC: Cooties (shown in the clip above)

Totally agree. The Yahoo contest itself was so lame. There’s a difference between writing authentic copy and just being lazy. I also love the promise of “prizes.” I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a backhanded coupon like a flickr credit or an upgrade to a yahoo email account. Yikes.
What would have made the Yahoo contest more viral? Embeddable voting mechanisms. Allow the creators, fans, and aggregators to share the voting application on their own site. The YVideo Blog isn’t much of a destination, so why force traffic to it? Rather than 20k votes, you might have
All that said, the contest’s lameness shouldn’t take away from the winners. 2007 was a great year for internet video and these were the vids with the most biggest fanbases. Congrats!

For all its flaws, I still appreciate the Yahoo Video Awards. (That may have something to do with the fact that we won Best New Uploader.) What I really appreciate is the celebration of the indy web producer at this moment when corporate behemoths and major studios are spinning off web production units as fast as they can print press releases. Corporate dominance of the web video is inevitable, but the greatest promise of “New” TV, (for me anyway, and I staked my life savings on it) has always been the possibility that a few individuals could use the platform to create a new kind of show, find an audience, and maybe even build a small business.
Yahoo’s web video awards were evidence of the promise of independent and genuinely new TV. Congrats to all the nominees an winners.
