iTunes to Offer Movies Same Day as DVD
Apple said today that new movie releases from major studios can now be purchased through iTunes on the same day as the DVD release. The company said new releases and older titles will be available from 20th Century Fox, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Lionsgate, Image Entertainment and First Look Studios.
Note that this is for purchases; the release doesn’t say anything about rentals, which kinda sucks since new releases are priced at $14.99. I’m no fan of DVDs, but for the same amount of money you get a format you can back up and all the extras. It’s nice that (legal) downloading is inching its way towards the mainstream, but it looks like I’ll have to keep my Netflix subscription.
Today’s news comes on the heels of Time Warner’s announcement yesterday that it will make all of its DVD films available on VOD on a day-and-date basis.
Other stats from Apple’s release: The iTunes store has 600 TV shows, 1,500 films including 200 that are in HD.

Rentals, rentals, rentals. Thats what I’m waiting on. And theather releases. $20 for a movie these days, hell i’ll pay $20 if the quality is good. I get to watch it a few times in a day in the comfort of my home. $20 well spent, less a black out or disruption in my broadband.
A subscription based streaming service is what Apple needs to look at and possibly rentals for devices like the iPod but with wireless devices and braodband becoming ubiquitous i think that downloading of videos to rent or buy is a stop gap measure for the short term .
At least the studios have come around to doing simultaneous day of release for DVDs and downloads and I too will keep my Netflix subscription and continue to rip the DVDs every time I get them .
If the Studios finally let Netflix have day of release movies for streaming I will stop ripping and get a device that can stream to my TV ;)
