Amanda Congdon Returns to Web Video

Amanda Congdon, famous for hosting pioneering video show Rocketboom and then famous for making a big fuss about leaving Rocketboom, is coming back to online video on her own terms. She’s posted a teaser for what looks to be a new ensemble comedy show, Sometimesdaily.

Introducing Sometimesdaily from Sometimesdaily on Vimeo.

What has Congdon been doing in the last couple years? She made a splash by joining ABC News, but only stayed (or was asked to stay) a year. Since then, Congdon’s web video making, even on her own videoblog, petered out. Her last post was a full six months ago.

Sometimesdaily describes itself as “an off-beat, interactive variety show exploring life’s themes through the inquisitive eyes of Amanda Congdon.”

  • I’m confused on what is supposed to be the compelling reason to watch this show.

It has all the makings of a very average YouTube offering. Weird dialogue. Meta references to online media. “Graphics.” No sound mixing whatsoever. Wait, here’s something different: a boobylicious Amanda Congdon mugging to the camera.

Perhaps new media is starting to look like old media in that it still takes a celebrity to draw attention and press coverage to a show that isn’t that slickly done.

Or maybe the mediocre production values is the point of the show and the joke’s on me. I want to like anything Amanda does because she was so fun on Rocketboom, but this just doesn’t convince me to return for the actual series.

  • Amanda had her 5 seconds in the sun, but we’re over it already. Her work over the past years has only shown that the real talent at Rocketboom was Andrew.

After watching the preview, I’m just embarrassed for her. Sadly.

  • What a terrible teaser. It doesn’t give you any idea what to expect from the show. I’ll watch because I’m interested in what’s happening in the online video space but if I was a regular person I wouldn’t even give it a second thought. I hope the show is a lot better.

  • I’ll give it a shot.

An aside: nice new Vimeo player, eh? Sexy!

  • She should probably quit while she is “ahead”…but then a lot of “video bloggers” should ; P
However, technically I think everyone agrees that this teaser is terrible. The sound is bad and the dialog is very poor. It’s like they are trying to be actors and innovative, and that rarely mixes well.

Sad to say, this is spot on.

  • If the real talent behind Rocketboom was all Andrew, can anyone tell me why Rocketboom sucks so bad now?

    Ok then.
