StumbleUpon Adds Six Video Hosts

The serendipity enablers at StumbleUpon said today they’ve added support for CollegeHumor, Funny or Die, Vimeo, Dailymotion, Veoh and vbs.tv videos for their video discovery service, StumbleVideo. StumbleVideo is a cool tool that pulls out good videos to watch in a nice simple web interface, using the wisdom of the crowds generated by eBay-owned StumbleUpon’s popular web page bookmarking and suggestion tool.

We reviewed StumbleVideo favorably when it first came out in December 2006, and have been especially interested in its early (if a little wonky) implementation on the Wii. It’s a no-fuss way to get web video to the living room.

StumbleVideo also won the audience vote for best video search and discovery site on a panel at our NewTeeVee Live conference last year. However, till now, the service only supported videos from YouTube, Google Video, MySpace, and Metacafe. The folks at StumbleUpon had been telling us forever they would add additional video hosts, so we’re glad to see them finally do it.

Here’s our original take:

The advantages: an AJAX-driven browser-based service that doesn’t require registration (as opposed to the company’s core webpage discovery service, with requires both download and user IDs), and automated formatting for a consistent experience for clips from YouTube, Google Video, and MySpace.

The result: an in-browser television of sorts, which you can sort by category, and which learns from your ratings if you register. It also has nice keyboard shortcuts for moving on to the next video, and giving videos a thumbs up or thumbs down. The program keeps a record of what you’ve seen and what you liked, so it’s essentially an automated bookmarking system.
