10 Million Homes Not Ready for DTV
With the big national switch to digital television just nine months away, a new study (PDF) from Nielsen reports that 9.4 percent of U.S. households, or about 10 million people, are completely unready for the transition. In other words, not a single TV set in these homes is hooked up to satellite, cable or equipped with a DTV tuner capable of receiving the digital broadcast transmission.

The good news, though, is that the number of unready households is down from 10.2 percent in January. The government started offering $40 coupons good towards the purchase of DTV converter boxes in January, and is in the midst of a big campaign to educate consumers about the upcoming switch, so that percentage should continue to go down.
Nielsen also found that 12.6 percent of U.S. households have at least one TV set not ready for DTV. Viewing on unready TV sets accounts for 7.5 percent of all television usage during the total day.
