YouTube Set to Dominate the Boob Tube
Dominance perpetuates itself, and that adage looks like it will hold true for YouTube as the company positions itself to be the 800-pound gorilla of short-form video on your TV as well.
YouTube is spreading itself all over the set-top world, getting to your oldteevee through big name partnerships with Apple TV, TiVo, HP MediaSmart Connect, Panasonic and now Sony. And as I saw yesterday with Panasonic, aside from a different interface, you’ll have the same YouTube experience on your TV.
YouTube saw the opportunity with these non-web platforms, so it began furiously encoding its content in the H.264 format to provide higher-quality streams. And that work is paying off as these partnerships extend YouTube’s lead over second-tier web video aggregators and push YouTube into the living room.
What does it all mean? Well, whether you like it or not, laughing babies and pee-drinking monkeys won’t be going away anytime soon.
