The ISP's shuttering of NNTP is simply political posturing, coupled with downgrading of the services they provide.
I saw no mention of Comcast, who as I recall were the first to give in to the pressure to remove this service from their lineup...and one can only imagine the amount of money that changed hands to make it happen. (read: corruption)

Well I think Mr Vogelpohl is twisting facts a bit here. A single mp3 or DVD file on usenet is split into 100s or 1000s of individual posts, which are downloaded and automatically joined to form the complete file. Only one take-down notice is required to corrupt a DVD or mp3 (usually by removing the first post). Maybe not all DVDs/mp3s attract a take-down notice, but I'd say close to 100% the materiel in these groups is copyrighted. After all who'd want to download anything else?

I used to get all nervous and excited about piracy-related news, but now i Just don't care. It's just going to keep getting bigger, and nobody can stop it. The free market demands free stuff.

Wow, Usenet is getting MORE popular? I thought nobody used it any more. Won't the ISP restrictions on unlimited use become more widespread and kill it?

It's good news that 'piracy' enabling services are still legal. And I'm not being sarcastic. The last thing I want is to be under the thumb of the studios who try to take advantage of viewers and artists alike. They make plenty of money anyway, new technology and legit services like YouTube and P2P prosper... the system works, leave it alone.
