&lt;p&gt;Exactly what that means is unknown but very intriguing.  For example. Open standard could mean files you get of torrents.  Stored on a typical media server/file server.  And at least RSS feeds.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Now that would be interesting and may be the case.  I suspect a land grab is now under way.  If the built in STB does not do these open protocols, users will purchase other STB&#039;s anyway.  And with every STB you purchase comes another gate keeper charging you to access the newest / premium content via that STB.
Sony and Panasonic want their STB in your TV and once you have it, have little reason to get an AppleTV for example.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;It will be an interesting Christmas.
