I have always believed this to be a possibility. On my blog, one of the most popular posts is that in which I described P2P protocols as just another evolutionary step in the internet. As we had ftp->http.

These (ftp, http) standard appeared and where adopted very fast. However, P2P technology has either disrupted traditional models or been seen as a cash cow by other larger companies (The rise of the CDN's).
As such, it has been side tracked as being painted as an evil technology with large corporations bringing pressure on those who try to evolve it into the open and evolutionary step in the internet.

It is interesting to see that it has taken Europe (And not the US), with its investment into P2P technologies as an open standard to try to break this. (Google the P2P streaming tests they are doing. Its been very successful I hear).
