Sci-Fi Shows Storm the Web

Didn’t get enough sci-fi at the recent Comic-Con? Fear not, true believers, soon all you’ll have to do is turn on your PC, as there will be more nerd-friendly series online than you can shake a light saber at.

Below is a sampling of sci-fi shows, some of which are already out, some of which are still in the works, and many of which feature Hollywood talent, writers or studio backing:

Gemini Division is a new thriller from NBC starring Rosario Dawson.
Trenches is a space war flick from ABC’s Stage9 Digital.
Woke Up Dead is a zombie comedy series starring Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite).
Ark is an upcoming space thriller from 60Frames Entertainment and starring Renee O’Conner of Xena fame.
The Awesomes is a superhero series from Seth Meyers of SNL.
The Line stars SNL’s Bill Hader as a guy waiting in line for a sci-fi/fantasy flick.

Not all of these will succeed, but science fiction already has a strong track record online. lonelygirl15 turned from a vlog into a thriller with tech overtones. Sanctuary was one of the early big-budget sci-fi series, it was even picked up to run on the Sci-Fi Network. And most recently, Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog darn near crashed the Internet.

In other words, brush up on your Klingon, this sci-fi phenomenon is here to stay.

The Line is silly fun but wouldn’t call it ’sci-fi’ ..Gemini looks way cool, Ark and Dead have potential,not so sure on Tenches.. also, AfterWorld was same company as Gemini and it was a big hit overseas I read.

Yeah, the Line isn’t sci-fi per se, but it will definitely appeal to the geek crowd.

And I’m not sold on Gemini, that trailer doesn’t look very promising. It almost reminds me of that old PC CD-ROM game The Daedalus Encounter with Tia Carrere.

LOL! Daedalus Encounter..saw a great spoof on that somewhere online.. Dont judge Gemin by that trailer – overheard it was just thrown together forThe Con. what got me interested were Gemini trailers here:

Another benefit of creating sci fi content is the potential to use the series to create a video game later down the line.

And don’t forget Nocturnal Web Series (www.nocturnalwebseries.com). Shot on location in and around Pittsburgh, PA, the series revolves around the mysterious circumstances surrounding the murder of a young woman named Natalie Brew (who, curiously enough, has never appeared in a single webisode).

Not unlike Twin Peaks, the identity of Natalie’s killer is one of the series’ overarching mysteries. And, as police investigators Archer Reilly and Sarah Pennington discover, there is no shortage of suspects. The series is a homage to the classic Gothic horror series Dark Shadows.
