Dr. Horrible Online Again for Free
Like all good supervillains, Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog has resurfaced, and is now available for free online over at Hulu. This is a bit of a surprise as Horrible was only supposed to be available for free online for a few days before vanishing and re-emerging as a paid download or DVD. At least this time around, the audience will earn Whedon a few bucks in ad revenue.
The entire series is presented as one movie, so you can watch the whole thing in one sitting. But you better be quick. Just like last time, Dr. Horrible will only be available on Hulu for a week for four months. Whedon even wrote the introductory blog post for the vid site:
“Point being, HULU hosted Dr. Horrible for free for a week, which we, the mushortio-makers, are forever grateful for, and now you can stream it for free on their site. How awesome is that? I know, you’re humbled. Stop groveling. Just remember: the more you watch it, the more you will understand about life and the universe and hydroponics. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry… and you just might learn long division. With songs! PLEASE watch it. We’re so lonely…”
And since we’re catching up with the Horrible crew, ReelPop Blog reports that Felicia Day, who played Penny in the series, will write and star in a new online series for Machinima.com. The comedy will take place inside a video game with individual episodes eventually packed together to form a half-hour pilot. (Guess we should add that to the list of sci-fi shows storming the web.)

What I wonder is if Dr. Horrible in the end will be worth Joss Whedon’s time?
For the rest of us the revenue from Dr. Horrible might be a nice paycheck but if Joss can make millions in writing and producing fees doing TV and make residuals on the back end of his TV deals is he just wasting his time with online video?

Joss Whedon wasting his time? Since when?
He has a television show hitting the airs next January, a cabin-in-the-woods film, entitled “Cabin in the Woods”, in the works. Then he’s got comic books and now this online series. He can’t waste his time when he doesn’t even have enough of it to start with…
This online thing was a test of sorts and plus, just having the freedom to do something fun that would be entirely too difficult to get on tv or on film. Probably could have gotten it on Broadway since they seem to be taking anything these days. Sigh, Broadway – what is happening to you? Don’t make us rename you “The Great Disney & B-movie Adaptation Way”. Couldn’t deal.
Anyway. Again, this was just some fun and freedom for him and his family and friends to experiment with. They didn’t want to really make lots of money out of it. They thought it’d be nice to so that everyone could be paid for their time, but those people offered their services knowing full-well they may not get a dime. And, well…they certain will be! LOTS of them. This series has received more hits than some shows these days have viewers. Which just goes to show you the power of the internet. You can bet, they’ll make big bucks off dvd purchases as well. It’ll be another Firefly [dvd] success, no doubt.
