I run a film distribution company called Heretic Films. I used to refer to us as a DVD distributor, but we've been putting more and more resources in to both digital downloads off our own site and digital and VOD deals. One thing my filmmakers always ask me is 'does this mean the end of special features'. I always tell them no. Even though no one has solved the tech puzzle I tell them I can't think of a single advancement in technology that as lead to a less robust final product, and that someone will figure out how to bundle special features, particularly director commentaries, with delivered video files. Thanks for covering this issue - I rarely see items about it online, but the more it's talked about the more people will work towards creative solutions. We take great pride in the features we've put on our disks over the years and though we can still post many of them on our site things like tools for syncing a commentary are still not easily available.

Thanks for commenting, Brian. I still say you're in a good business. But I'd be interested to hear some of the feedback you've gotten.

I've been a DVD special features producer for a few years and I've been pushing the studios hard to move towards the internet for about a year now. Nobody's biting. I can't say for sure why but it's frustrating.

I think in that regard it would be interesting to know how many people actually watch all that extra stuff producers pack onto dvds. I normally don't.
