DivX CEO: “It’s Win or Go Home”
DivX is in the midst of a major transformation. The company has set its sights on becoming the platform on which all of your digital entertainment delivered. Think beyond just another set-top box; DivX is aiming to be the digital Swtizerland, delivering web, premium and personal content to just about any online device connected to your TV.
With heavyweights like Apple, Netflix and Amazon all jockeying for same goal, the company has its work cut out for it. When we last chatted with DivX CEO Kevin Hell, he talked about his company’s recent acquisition of H.264 shop Main Concept and the company’s move beyond the PC. Hell stopped by the NewTeeVee pier today and told us more about the company’s transformation, how it’s “win or go home” time for DivX, and the challenges of squaring off against the likes of Apple to turn DivX into a household name.

DIVX deserves accolades for how they were able to monetize the bazillion hours of pirated content as the format flourished during the ‘rip-off’ days. They convinced dozens of DVD manufacturers that the content was relevant, leveraged licensing for the inclusion of the brand and built it into $100M a year in revenues….
….but is the party over for DIVX??
DVD players are still selling, but the growth story there is over….it appears Blu-ray, not DVD will be the last major ‘family room’ hardware format standing….
How does DIVX replace the DVD royalties that will decline?
Hell knows that video is moving to devices and it’s the the RIA’s that will determine the formats. DIVX is upgrading the tech to H.264 over the decade old MPEG4 offering, a smart move as it will allow DIVX to play in the move to standardization, but it also brings it to the level of a half dozen others who are offering superior and more comprehensive video device IP solutions…..
Thanks for the information Chris!
