FYI.....$600 for a 1T hddvr is a joke! As a new Dish
subscriber you can request a 722 hddvr with a
500GB hard drive that can record THREE streams at
the same time, and is by far the highest rated HDDVR
for functionality by every review I have ever read for the grand cost of $0!! Thats right, NO hardware cost!
Activate the external hard drive function for $40 and
buy a 500GB hard drive for $110 (costco) and you're
total cost for 1Terabyte is $150...factor in Dish's
current offerings of over 100 HD channels, 1080p VOD on certain movies and the incredibly fast function
response time and its a no brainer if you're looking for
a new HD provider.

[...] New TiVo HD XL: Big Drive, Big Price $600 is a lot but they’re targeting custom installers and Magnolia. It basically uses the same TiVo HD hardware, so the cost to get this out the door is low. As long as they keep production under control, this will be a high margin item for TiVo. What they really need to do is get the TiVo HD down to 199. Given this early launch, I could see both units dropping by a hundred (rebate, maybe?) in mid or early November for holiday sales.

Given that Comcast is capping their bandwidth at 250 GBs, I don't think we'll ever see a 1 TB HD networked DVR. After I got my series 3 (which was more expensive then the XL), I upgraded the hard drive and it's made all the difference in the world. Last season, I was able to record the entire season of Desperate Housewives in HD without ever having to worry about running out of space. Over the summer I had enough saved up that I was able to watch first run shows when repeats were the only thing showing. It was really nice. When I had a cable DVR, there was no way to upgrade the hard drive even if you were willing to pay more and it seemed liked I could only go about a week without TV before I started losing shows. $600 is still a lot of money, but if you are going to spend the money on TiVo to begin with, it's worth paying the extra to never have to worry about storage.
