19-year-old Commits Suicide on Justin.tv
In a striking display of the power of live video, Abraham K. Biggs committed suicide on Wednesday while broadcasting himself on video site Justin.tv. As we understand it from various forum posts, the 19-year-old Floridian was apparently egged on by commenters on Justin.tv and fellow forum users on bodybuilding.com. Biggs overdosed on pills while on camera and appeared to be breathing for hours until watchers realized he might be serious, at which point they alerted the police. The video kept running until police and EMTs broke Biggs’ door down and blocked the camera’s view.
We confirmed Biggs’ death with the Broward County medical examiner. The Justin.tv video and many of the forum posts have been taken down.
When asked about the broadcast via email, Justin.tv CEO Michael Seibel said:
As for the broadcaster incident last night, we don’t comment on individual videos, however, our policy prohibits inappropriate content on Justin.tv. We rely on the community to flag videos that they feel are objectionable. Once a video is flagged, it is reviewed and quickly removed from the system if it violates our Terms of Use.
We won’t post the disturbing content here, but much of it is still online. Images of the broadcast have been posted here and here, and there’s also a suicide note from Biggs, who went by the screenname CandyJunkie. An account of forum users watching the broadcast and calling the police is here. There are also rest-in-peace comments on what appears to be Biggs’ MySpace page. The Justin.tv broadcast used to be here.
The contention that filming and uploading (and even hosting video of) a crime is a crime as well might not be valid, but given the very nature of live broadcasts, the issue becomes more complicated.
And it’s not as if technology enabled the taking of a life, or as if this hasn’t happened before. A British man hung himself last year after allegedly being goaded on by fellow users on Paltalk, another live video site. There was even a widely distributed movie on the topic of live-streamed killings released earlier this year called Untraceable. But last night’s incident raises a thought-provoking question regarding free hosting of live broadcasts — what could sites like Justin.tv possibly do to prevent live-streamed snuff films?
Justin.tv has already come under fire for another problem with live broadcasts — copyright infringement. The Premier League is reportedly threatening legal action against the site over unauthorized broadcasts of soccer games. Justin.tv, which is a free service, has maintained it complies with takedown requests according to the law — but with live broadcasts, the key event often ends before lawyers can get involved. Or in Biggs’ case, before people who care about him could get through.

Submitted to digg, wow .. what a thing, that bullying can go so far. But of course, he could just quit his cast and ignore these lame misc users. On the other hand, live suicide is something we don’t need where people in the room shout “do it, i dare you” and such comments. I am glad I missed it, and I am sad that JTV got stained by this. It reminds me of the broadcast of some UK bloke who hang himself after the channel called him every name in the book. Was that on ustream or jtv?

Gee Liz, I’m as big of a proponent of online video as you. As a former writer of Rocketboom, I’m as bullish as the next person. But do you think “the power of live video” is the best angle here? If you can’t highlight the real issues here, maybe leave such a story to more relevant blogs!

To Whom It May Concern, I am going to leave this for whoever stumbles across my bookmarks later on. I hate myself and I hate living. I think that if someone who knows me reads this they will know who I am. So I will leave this unsigned. I am an a@#hole. I thought that I would not be able to describe why I want to do this and I am right. There is no way to tell you or anyone else why I dread every new day. My father had such high expectations for me and tried to give me every opportunity to improve upon myself. I let him down. I think that I am a major disappointment to him. I have a job but I?m always broke and I am in college but barely, I show up to class but that?s about it. I want my life to end. I am tired of f@#$ing up everything. I am tired of people always telling me that they do not like me. I am tired of trying to be decent. I hope that someone finds this post and I hope that my parents know that I f@#$ed up not them. It is my fault I screwed up my own life. The hate that rages within me, rages not for those I love so dearly or those who have crossed my path. This hate rages full force towards me and only me. This is so unfortunate how such a young person is forced to take his own life. Unable to handle the stress of life, and worst of all not able to ask for help(or maybe there is no help). This is becoming an all to often occurrence especially in relation to the internet. People this young shouldn’t have to suffer the consequences of not getting the help they need. With this suicide, although help is available, it’s in my opinion not advertised throughout the world as they way to go when dealing with personal life issues/problems.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of this young lad. I’m so sorry to hear about your loss, but moreover how the young man wasn’t able to sort out his matters and difficulties.

I was present at said live cast. I only was there for about say 15 minutes, I saw him starting to sleep – I got bored thinking it was probably some weird people watching a guy sleep. In the chat it’s not like they say it was with people egging him on – it really wasn’t like that.
The media and blogs are trying to make it seem like he was pushed into it and convinced to do it by chatters but that’s simply not what happened. He was already decided to do it. The conversation was mostly random stuff and yea there were people saying things like go for it, but most of the chat was people asking why and there were people saying random stuff that had no relevance. Some were asking others how long they had been watching, and others still were telling him not to do it – including one creepy religious guy/gal who was spouting off biblical verses. But asides from that you won’t hear the media and that includes newteevee talk about the people who told him not to. People who told him that his life no matter how bad was worth living.
You simply won’t hear about that because they either don’t know, or the story just sounds better to ignore that fact.

This kid gets egged on by comments to kill himself on a live broadcast in his room. How pathetic can you be if people over the internet can convince you to kill yourself? He over dosed on pills then passes out and dies. It says the police later busted into the room and covered the camera. That is where it gets odd. How did the anyone no what house it was to even call the police? Was the front door open? A lot of unanswered questions.
Some people are just attention whores. If you are going to kill yourself why do you need to do it on a live broadcast? It’s truly just sad.

I too read the forums about this incident and it is perfectly clear that the poor guy had already taken the pills before writing his suicide note. So how can anybody be accused of egging him on or bullying him? Itis clear that he was a disturbed person and it appears that he had tried this before hence some people might have made remarks which look like they egged him on. The web breeds alot of weird, shocking and wonderful stuff, but sloppy journalism is a big problem.

One’s life can become so completely screwed up that the only way out is suicide. Unfortunately in every suicide case I’ve ever seen, there is another solution that was completely ignored: hard work. This guy admits in his note that his family gave him every opportunity to make something out of himself, indeed he was still in school, but just kept screwing things up. This tells me he was too damn sorry to work his way out of the hole he’d dug for himself.

If I were Michael Seibel (CEO, Justin.TV) or his PR rep, I would probably demonstrate a bit more compassion for this kid’s family in his statement. In reality, most people wouldn’t blame the site or its management for this incident and those that would blame Justin.TV would have done so anyway. To treat a tragic suicide as a “violation of the terms of use” is PR flackery at its most heartless.

At least twice I’ve called the cops during a chat-room suicide. Once the person had already taken pills. The other time the person had a history of previous attempts and had the pills at the ready. Both survived.

The headline should read: “Boy Cries Wolf One Too Many Times.”
The sad fact is that CJ was a pathological liar. He faked overdosing many times before. He also, lied about winning the lottery, having a supermodel girlfriend, being homeless, hitchiking around the world, etc.
I for one didn’t know CJ(Abraham) other than reading the threads he posted in the “Misc” section of the Bodybuilding.com forums, but from what I can surmise, he was a deeply disturbed young man.
He wanted to die, and he did…
I feel for his family and friends, but he got what he wanted. Nothing anyone watching could have said would have changed that.
The responsibility lies with his close friends and Family, not a couple other kids from an online bodybuilding forum.
It’s sick to see everyone miss quoting the facts. Please learn the truth about the situation before you open your mouth.

While Biggs bears responsibility for his own actions, both the people who viewed it and the company who broadcasted it also bear some share of the responsibility. Perhaps they’re not liable, but Biggs died on their watch. We’re all responsible for what goes on in society; if I don’t feed a homeless person who later dies of starvation, then I must shoulder some of the blame.

The videos are flagged as inappropriate by the viewers. Therein is the issue; obviously these people wanted to see this poor kid do it, so they weren’t going to flag it as inappropriate. It’s reasons like this the FCC requires all television and cable channels to have two censors watching at all times.
This poor kid could have been alive today, what was he doing spending so much time on justintv and the internet? These are paltry replacements for face to face social interaction.

I remember once I just felt I could not cope I went to the social service for help. I knew something was wrong maybe it was my nerves playing up. by then I had dyed my hair carrot and maybe looked like a diva. I couldnt stand living bet people, they made me knew they dont like me my music the way I look or anything about me. I made a f riend nearby but before long she acted strange to because of certain influence like jumbies around her perhaps(LOL) any I knew I had to move to a better more calmer surrounding, but social services send someone who told me i was fine in less than no time the case was closed I knew I was not fine thoughtI might have looked fine. I still think it had something to do with the way I looked, carrot hair, earing, everything that a depressed person wont look like thats what i thought, misleading the people perhaps I was supposed to be earing less, and dirty I thought, it had taken me hours to get out of the bath, they said you fine she said I know you yoiu aright, from then I knew I was on my own with whatever I felt, I made a promise to myself I will look clean as long as i have strength even if that mean I will look like I am pretending to be depressed. I like to be clean, looking and being clean had a lot to do with me being alive today, I was told stories when you going to see them look dirty which I ignore, sometimes you need the help now in the early stages of what you going through before its to late. Was it my bag it was sent as a present from America and it was genuine tommy hillfigure. I am depressed but I remember I like to look clean and nice. I thank god for helping me he was the only one, so whenever I feel so I belive if I ask him he will help and I believe I will feel better next day whatever the case how bad is the case.
I never really felt to kill myself there is someone I really love and will not want to hurt them or leave them alone in this world, but I did go into feeling of lowness, the funny thing I dont think people I knew even recognise that, I dont think so all they knew is I am getting scarce. I will surface agian in time(LOL)there is mental illness in my family as well. After a while I stop complaining and learnt to teach myself to cope, I had to no one believed me maybe I didi not look the part or they dont care.

Satan takes over the world…people egged on Megan Meier as well…there are several other internet suicides to “choose from” for these wankers to “get off on”.
Again, just like Meier, the boy was doped up on psych drugs and diagnosed with “bipolar disorder” which is as common as warts in this generation. The drugs, especially the antipsychotics, or neuroleptics, can give a patient despairing depression worse than they would get on their own with their “illness” which they probably do not have.
Parents, don’t drag your children to psychiatrists! Discipline them yourselves! Teach them values and they won’t stray from them later. Don’t let a pill do the work for you, you lazy slobs! If you give up your child to psychiatry you might as well just throw him on the street because that’s how the child feels after you give up on him.

My pray is for the parents of Abraham K. Biggs, may they find comfort from friends today! This is my first attempt at Blogging, hopefully I can better share my beliefs with people that come into my life. We all should shoulder more of our responsibilities, now, after reading about Abraham. He was hurting, long before his death. May God forgive those who feel responsible, and I believe He has!

I feel the paln of the family that has lose one of there family members from the case of suicide vicyims, i myself has lose two love one and i still hurt till this day thinking that it was something that i could have done to help the both off them to see another dayand for the parents of Abraham K. Biggs i wish you well and im truly sorry for you losed.

The suicide self-victim had posted on his Body Building site on November 6th, 2 weeks prior, that his account had been closed for a prior attempt to commit suicide.
“I got banned for a month for attempting sucide and my JTV account was deleted :-(”
I judge: “He was a repeat offender. He is the wrong-doer. Not Justin TV, not Body Builder.com. Not his dealer, Not his father, not his mother and not God. He did the crime of suicide.
Analysis:
In Los Angeles, the bus drivers constantly have to watch out for homeless people (actually anybody, but usually homeless people who are at the end of their rope) jumping in front of the bus to kill themselves. Should we shut down the public buses because the bus drivers can’t stop the bus quick enough to foil the person jumping in front of the bus?
In all beach communities worldwide, people who want to suicide, have to be rescued, against their will, when the person uses the ocean to suicide themselves. Should we shut down swimming in the ocean because some people break the law by drowning themselves intentionally? I say, “No.” The right action is to hold the self-suicide-perpetrator-victim responsible. Please repeat after me, “I hold the perpetrator responsible.”
Third example: All armed police officers become responsible to not let self-suicide-wanna-be perpetrators to use armed police to kill themselves. One method is to point a toy guy, in public, at an armed police officer. The officer has only fractions of a second to think his response throroughly before acting. He must ask himself: 1. Is this a real gun? 2. Is this person trying to cause a suicide by provoking a police use of a deadly weapon in self defense? 3. Should I wait until I find out if a bullet comes out of the person’s gun to find out if this is a toy gun or whether this is a real gun?
I suggest, that instead of spending energy feeling pity for the 19 year old serial suicide attempter, you, the forum, chat-reader, search on the internet for counseling sites to police officers who decided to shoot the toy-gun-suicide-wanters, not knowing the correct answers to the above three questions. Take a stand! Say and pledge, “Everytime I hear about a crime self-suicide perpetrator succeeding in their sought after suicide, I will find a forum chat site to have a talk with a grieving, self-doubting 1. bus driver; 2. life guard; 3. police officer.
Attempt to chat with that person until they come to the realization that 1. They did not cause the success of the “person-seeking-a-successul-suicide”; 2. They did not ask for this experience; 3. It is asking too much of them to be telepathically pre-cognitive enough to not have been “in that place, at that time”. Once you succeed in bringing the counterparty (person who was there at the time of the suicide) to the state of self-evaluation stated above, I suggest you recruit them to be your co-counselor for at least one future counseling service to an other “Why was I there? victim.”.
In the instant case (current case) the self-suicide perpetrator was alone in a locked room. Thus, no person was physically there. So, no person fits the category of “Being at the wrong place at the wrong time.” Thus, this case provides humanity an excellent opportunity to review their response to this kind of death.
You are encouraged and authorized to send this recipe for response to a suicide to any and all persons that you think it can help.
I would guess that you have never seen this message from anyone before.

This is very sad, this is peer pressure at its worse. But ive heard alot of people saying that its the technologys fault. Personally I don’t think technology or the internet is to blame for this. People seem to forget there are still real people interactive with one another over the internet, some think its “not real” but I dont understand this. Course its real im there are two people communicating at their computers. I feel so sorry for the parents and wish them all the best for the future as it must be hard comming to turns with a loss of a son.

only people who suffers from depression themselves might understand how this guy felt not people who don’t, how can you blame him at all, i regret that he did not get the treatment that could have saved him, this is a lesson for people to see what kind of people is on the web, all he needed was a pull in the right direction who don’t sometimes, We cannot really blame the people for his death, this was something he felt he had to do, but however they should be blamed for their unkind words against him a guy who bears no grudge against people he met, maybe it was hard to keep him on suicide watch, maybe if his family watched him he might have still found a way maybe everythign is just maybe. Well if I had sen this boy on the street, i would not just be able to look at him and say he is depressed, he is so clean cut, never judge a book by the cover, he looks more well than the average well look would’nt you say how on earth did the doctor manage to believe him and give him these pills while he looked like this, if he was misdiagonse he will not have the pillls within his reach, the same pills that was suppose to make him well.

“downcast my soul you are for real” I am glad you did not come here blaming a blog but the medication given instead, which might one delerious.I have know people to get worst after the medication they really freaked out or become freaky. all the person need is love and care I think in that stage and someone to work with them especially in the beginning not to be ignored. The medication last for so long and when you come of it all hell could break lose you can become jumbi like or even to jolly. and then you mihght freak out again if you depending on the medication . I had originally planned on writing a journal to document my thoughts after my suicideattempt, but instead I chose to put my thoughts and ideas in the form of poetry. I just hope that in some way or another; that by sharing my poems with other people; thatthey will also have an impact on other men, women and teenagers of any race, gay orstraight…. that have gone or are now going through the thoughts of contemplatingsuicide, and that you will be able to absorb some of the meaning in my poems and takeaway a new outlook on life; in knowing that there are other people in the world who are going through the same emotional anguish. My book, My Suicidal Heart, also has several pages of “Resource and Helplines”, for people who are dealing with depression and/or suicidal tendencies. There are multiple organizations, websites, contact addresses and phone numbers for people of all ages, races, gay or straight; both national and international. For not only people who are depressed and/or contemplating suicide, but for people who either know someone who is showing the sign(s) of depression and/or suicidal thoughts; to people who have lost someone to suicide, so they too can get the bereavement help and support they need.
Synopsis:
Suicidal thinking and behavior are prevalent among all classes of society. Many cultures are impacted by the tendencies to end one’s life, despite their spiritual beliefs. The pressures of growing up are becoming more relevant in our fragmented lives. Childhood and adulthood are a war for some, and the toxic bed of pain becomes too much to handle. They blame themselves when all the burdens settle on them. We can’t act obliviously to this rising epidemic of suicide. We need to recognize the warning signs to save someone who is emotionally stressed without any hopes of love, happiness, living life to the fullest and experiencing what God has given us, before this becomes a vicious circle. Writing these poems gave me the inspiration and insight to enjoy this one life, and to help others by sharing them, so hopefully you can get the help you want and need.

Here are some things to consider 1.) you can always walk away and start new, you just have to try…really try, not a half-ass attempt. 2.) young kids have no idea how long life really is. Even if you fuck up for 19 yrs, there is usually still lots of time to make it alright. 3.) talking to people about your feelings, is a good thing, nothing to be ashamed of, and it helps. 4.) and the last one is for my dad, who said it to me through all the year of growing up “your the most important person in your life”, it’s great to love people but you gotta look out for yourself. THINK.

It’s truly sad what he did to himself. I haven’t seen the video but I am curious to see how his last moments ended. But I know that I can’t watch a person die, it would be to hard. For the parents, You see crap like this on T.V. and Newspapers, ect., and you don’t think that your child could ever do that. But, you don’t really know what your child is going through. He/She may seem happy on the outside, but maybe on the inside, he/she could be wishing that he/she was dead. So make sure, that the last moments you spend with your child or parents even, that their special. Even if there moments being angry at one another. Cause’ there still special. I went on Abraham’s MySpace page, and I looked at his profile. He talked about being a kind-hearted man, and that he was always there for his friends. And I believe that. This family has suffered a losse that will hurt and taunt them for the rest of their lives. I realize that it wasn’t their faults. It was nobody’s fault. But Abraham was hurting on the inside. And he thought he had to kill himself, just to make everyone happy. But he was wrong. We can’t spin time around and change what had already happened. But Abraham is living in your hearts. He was a really nice guy and from his pictures, I can tell he has people that love him. And he won’t forget about any of us.. especially his parents. Because he love’s them, and he won’t forget them. I am so sorry for everything he went through, and I can tell by his death note, he was unhappy with his life. And that’s sad. And I am also sorry for his parents, you loved him and you probably cry each day cause’ he aint there. But he still is, in your hearts.

Jusin tv will not be marred by this event for my family, we will still tune in to watch appropriate broadcasting for our family. This is without a doubt a tragidy and so close to Christmas. My heart goes out to the family of the boy and to all parents this time of year who experience loss. It’s a terrilbe thing to happen to any one any where any time. If every I see something ‘odd’ in reality internet I will be reminded of this event and I will make a phone call in hopes to stop any one else from being harmed.
My Christmas wish this year… may we all find a little more hope in each new day and spead that feeling to all others……just smile and this too shall pass.

I just read this now in 2009 and I wish that at least someone would have helped that boy instead of encouriging him. There is always at least one person in the world that cares about you and that is God and your parents. If you would have been smart enough to realize that he was taking pills that have drugs in them then you would have been smart enough to call the police instead of just standing there for 10 hours watching him and doing nothing about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your heart is cold as ice. I hope you never have kids. That is a very hateful thing to say. This was a human life. My God rest his soul and forgive him. You say you loved it …hmm you do not know what love is. Suicide is not the answer. Pray for people who needs help. I pray for the people who was affected such as his family, friends and the abundance who witness this tragic incidence.
