Weekend Vid Picks: Apple and Steve Jobs Endure

According to the stats, ’tis not as much the season for giving iPods as it was last year: Apple shipped 18.6 million units this quarter, a 16 percent decline from the fourth quarter of 2007. That doesn’t mean that Steve Jobs and his well-branded package of products are out of the cultural zeitgeist — quite the opposite, in fact.

A clip from British comedian Peter Serafinowicz’s upcoming Christmas comedy special satirizes both the distinctive tone of Apple commercials and technology’s obsessive drive towards the small. Presenting…the Mactini.

Meanwhile, it’s a testament to the quality of Apple’s design that this montage of Apple products, starting with the first logos and prototypes, is so watchable (and has gone so viral.) But given Apple’s legal struggles with the Beatles recording company of the same name, the video’s song choice (Fiona Apple’s cover of Across the Universe) might raise an eyebrow or two.

While some believe that Jobs will be handing over the Apple reigns sometime soon, he’ll never really leave our hearts. After all, he got parodied on The Simpsons. That lasts forever.
