A good alternative delivery method. It may be hard to believe, but not everyone has access to the high-speed internet that is needed to download movies via the web. Either because of the cost or the geographic location or personal choice. All media have their downside – magnetic tape gets tangled, dvd’s get scratched and SD cards could get lost or misplaced. Convenience and cost will determine if it works.

Nice idea if it was 1999

While in general the idea might not be bad for some niche markets (still need to imagine WHAT markets) I think it is simply outdated. Of course over the air download of HD content is still in a nascent (if you do not happen to live in Japan or South Korea) but in the long term this SD based solution will be replaced by on-demand, over the air download services.

NTT DoCoMo already showed an HD video content distribution solution last year. (downloaded to the mobile phone over UMTS, then the phone connects to an HD TV screen and displays nice and crips 720p (1080p soon to come)

So maybe for a few years this SD kiosk concept MIGHT have its "raison d'être"

There are a couple of reasons why delivery of digital assets through kiosks (to SD cards or direct download) makes sense.

1) Better Margins than home delivery
2) Security for Content Providers
3) Simpler for Many Consumers
4) Overcomes Bandwidth Limits
5) Multiple Formats/Languages/Add-ons
6) Eliminates Distribution/Inventory Costs of DVDs
7) Massive Selection Globally
8) And most important, you can merchandise in stores. Any property out the long tail benefits from this model.

Assuming widespread uptake with >10,000 POS in North America….and it could work for music too!
