Showtime Comes to iPhones
Full seasons of Showtime’s original series are coming to iPhones and iPod Touches in April. BUT they’ll be password protected, so as to only be available to voting members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The app, powered by mobile video startup Transpera, is part of Showtime’s ongoing efforts to move away from DVD screeners for Emmys voters, following on the network utilizing web streaming powered by Brightcove to distribute its shows to voters last year.
Meanwhile, a publicly available version of the iPhone app is on the way, and it will also be powered by Transpera. The public app will be ad-supported and is expected to be out in a few weeks. But it’s a sure bet that the app will have a more limited selection of episodes than what Emmy voters get. For reference, Showtime only streams a single episode of each of its series on its site now (one such episode of Dexter is embedded above).
The Showtime apps come on the heels of TV.com, also a CBS company, launching its own iPhone app powered by Transpera and Veveo last week.

Ad-supported Showtime content rather than whatever “deal” the cable company is offering? I’ll take it. Like most people, I am all for content providers monetizing so they can create good stuff, but the distribution MUST be more a la carte than it is now, so consumers can choose only what they want to watch and pay for.
