IMDb to Give Web Shows Their Own Category

Dr. Horrible, lonelygirl15, Ask a Ninja. All great “TV series.” That’s according to IMDb, which doesn’t have a separate designation for web shows.

Galacticast creator and star Casey McKinnon writes the Amazon-owned site will add separate categories for web series and one-off online videos later this year. She got the word from IMDb founder and managing director Col Needham at SXSW, where he also talked up the site’s efforts to add more streaming movies and TV.

That’s not to say IMDb is opening the web series floodgates; the site requires at least mainstream coverage or large viewership to include a show. When asked how it would evolve its standards and make them more specific, Amazon declined further comment today.
