“TV Everywhere” Trials Could Come in the Second Half of 2009
Time Warner is in talks with distributors about its “TV Everywhere” initiative and could roll out trials of the service during the second half of this year, CEO Jeff Bewkes said during the company’s earnings call yesterday.
TV Everywhere is an authentication concept that would require viewers to prove that they have a cable, telco or satellite subscription before they could watch certain premium content online or on other platforms.
Bewkes didn’t offer up details as to which distributors his company was talking to or specify when the trials would begin. Time Warner already has a mini-version of a similar authentication service in trials in Wisconson with HBO Go. The upcoming TV Everywhere trials could include content from Time Warner properties like HBO and Turner Broadcasting System as well as from other providers.
The back half of 2009 is poised to bring big disruptions to the premium online content space. In addition to Time Warner’s plans, Comcast has said it’s laser-focused on bringing its own authentication system to market during the second half of this year as well.
