I’m With the Band: Hulu to Live-Stream Dave Matthews Show
Hulu is expanding its live-streaming ambitions and will carry an exclusive Dave Matthew Band concert on June 1 that will feature songs from the upcoming DMB album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, a tribute to the band’s saxophonist LeRoi Moore, who died last summer. Hulu has done some live-streaming before, but that was for presidential-related activities like debates, the inauguration and speeches. This is a pure entertainment play.
Both Hulu and YouTube have been wading deeper into the live-streaming waters lately. YouTube live-streamed its YouTube L!ve event last year and more recently hosted CBS’s live online coverage of March Madness and President Obama’s “100 Days” news conference. Though DMB has an official YouTube channel (where the video embedded comes from), this event seems a little small for the video-sharing giant. But perhaps concerts will become a part of Vevo, YouTube’s upcoming satellite spin-off with Universal Music.
There have long been rumors of Hulu adding music videos to its content library. Right now the site offers musical programming (Xanadu, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) and a smattering of music videos, but not a full-blown music video catalog. Hulu will offer the Big Whiskey concert on demand following the show as well as an exclusive airing of Scenes from Big Whiskey, a documentary about making the upcoming album, as well as original and live music videos.
The concert will be held at the Beacon Theater, which has been a hotbed for live-streaming lately. Moogis, a company founded by Allman Brothers Band member Butch Trucks, recently offered a subscription service to let users watch the Allman Brothers perform a run of 15 shows at the Beacon live online.
Hulu’s live coverage of Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King starts at 9 p.m. ET on June 1.
