Sunday Night Football Starts Streaming in September
One sure sign that the summer is coming to a close? People are gearing up for football. And while the NFL may be behind some of its sports league brethren in terms of online video, you will be able to watch all 17 Sunday Night Football games live on the web this season.
Games will be available on NBCSports.com and NFL.com, and just like last year, coverage will feature four different camera angles to choose from. Unlike last year, the games will be shown using Microsoft’s Silverlight, not Adobe’s Flash. The games will be available in HD and will offer DVR functionality as well as slow-motion replay.
NBC Sports digital head Perkins Miller told paidContent that Sunday Night Football streaming is still an “experiment” and that revenue earned from a single game is in the “seven-figure range.”
Those wanting to watch the Sunday night games will have to point their browsers to NBC or NFL as the player won’t be embeddable and no syndication plans have been firmed up yet.
While it’s making some progress, the NFL is certainly far behind Major League Baseball, which has had a thriving online video business and recently extended its subscription service to big-screen TVs through the Roku. The NFL does offer a broadband version of its Sunday Ticket package to DirecTV subscribers, but it’s only available to people in New York who can’t get their satellite signal and it costs $349.
