Watch the Bay Bridge Construction Live
The big news in the San Francisco Bay Area this weekend is the closure of the Bay Bridge connecting San Francisco and Oakland for five days for a key graft in its multi-year seismic retrofit. At a height of 150 feet over Yerba Buena Island, where the two spans of the bridge connect in a tunnel, a 300-foot double-decker piece of bridge is going to be cut out and removed, and a new one moved into place that will eventually connect up the new and improved East Span.
It’s a good thing when construction projects don’t have drama and intrigue, but this is a pretty tricky maneuver, and one that might actually be interesting to tune into. Unless you buy a ride in that crazy Bay Area zeppelin, the best bird’s eye view is actually online. At BayBridgeInfo.org, there are live camera feeds of the skyway, Treasure Island, and Yerba Buena Island powered by EarthCam. If all goes well, when the bridge reopens next week, drivers will have a new dog-leg to the south on the east side of the tunnel.
