NewTeeVee Live: The CliffsNotes Version
Not to pat ourselves on the back, but you know how we know yesterday’s NewTeeVee Live conference was awesome? We’re not exhausted. Typically after an all-day show packed with interviews, on-stage moderating, and shaking hands, you’re pretty wiped out.
But the energy was so great yesterday that we’re just pumped for the year ahead. If you weren’t able to attend, you should check out the video from the day (thanks, Livestream!), but if you’re looking for something faster, here’s a recap of what we learned:
Fireside chats = awesome
We went out on a limb yesterday and built our day around one-on-one chats and short presentations and only had one panel. The result was the ability to have deeper conversations and extract real news from our guests.
Take Comcast’s TV Everywhere To Go
Comcast Interactive president Amy Banse is a charmer who could sell ice to the Eskimos. Talking with her, you literally start thinking “Hey, Comcast isn’t so bad… maybe I should get that triple play package.” While she’s a cagey one, Banse did provide us tasty TV Everywhere nuggets:
- First, it sounds like Comcast’s On Demand Online will be available “by Hanukkah” (which starts Dec. 11).
- You’ll need to download the Move player along with an authentication app, and you can authorize up to three devices in the home.
- Also, contrary to earlier reports — Comcast subscribers will be able to access their On Demand Online content outside the home. So you can fire up your laptop while traveling to catch up on content you may have missed.
TV Everywhere: Livestream of NewTeeVee Live
The race to bring the flexibility and variety of online video delivery to the comfort of your couch was taken to a whole new level in 2009 — soon, the content you want to watch will be accessible wherever and whenever you want. With that in mind, the theme our third annual NewTeeVee Live event is TV Everywhere. Join us today here at the Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco as we talk to some of the industry’s key players to learn about the future of this increasingly exciting industry. Our livestream — which includes a chat feature — will start at 9 am PT, and we will be live-blogging the onstage sessions throughout the day. The Twitter hashtag is #ntvl. Enjoy! Live-streaming Event: Video Rights Roundtable
Online video and copyright have been through a lot in the past few years, evolving from a highly contentious relationship to more a transactional partnership. But media creators and technology companies have learned about each others’ businesses largely in conference rooms and in courts. Today, at the NewTeeVee HQ here in San Francisco, we’re holding an event aimed at bringing the discussion into the light, giving stakeholders the chance to talk to one another constructively. Participants today will include content owners, video sites and copyright service providers, such as Ethan Applen, director of technology and business strategy, Warner Bros.; Betsy Zedek, counsel, content protection, Fox Group Legal; David King, senior product manager of Content ID, YouTube; Michael Seibel, CEO, Justin.tv; and Yangbin Wang, CEO, Vobile.
We will be live streaming the event, starting at 9:30 am PT, for two hours. We hope you can join us — please leave your thoughts as to what’s being discussed in the comments section. And for those who want to talk about it online, the Twitter hash tag is #NTVL.

YouTube As Fact Checker: UK Politicians Turn to the Tape
Here in the UK, last night’s Question Time — a BBC show where audience members can ask questions of a panel, usually consisting mainly of politicians — caused uproar as the BBC invited Nick Griffin, the controversial leader of the far right British National Party, to participate on the show.
While the general opinion seems to be that Griffin’s appearance hasn’t done his party many favors (and Griffin is planning on formally complaining about his treatment on the show), one thing about the show struck me as interesting. Every time Griffin tried to portray his party as being more moderate in its views, the other members of the panel would respond by pointing out various videos of Griffin available on YouTube, such as this one of Griffin appearing on stage with Ku Klux Klansman David Duke and explaining how to “sell” far right ideas, or denying that the holocaust took place. The live show didn’t stitch in the videos themselves, but the fact they existed was enough. While Griffin could claim that some quotes attributed to him in the media were untrue or taken out of context, it was very hard for him to deny the video evidence.
To see UK politicians — among them Jack Straw, a senior member of the Cabinet — citing specific YouTube videos to discredit Griffin (rather than, say, taking quotes from newspaper articles) was surprising and effective. Griffin had to resort to saying he couldn’t comment on the content of the Holocaust denial video out of concern he would be prosecuted under European law — a statement that was flatly denied by Jack Straw, who has some authority on the topic as UK Justice Secretary.
