NewTeeVee Pier Screenings – Citizen News

We’re closing out our summer San Francisco Pier Screenings series on August 29, and are bringing the event back to the pier. For the month of August, we’re soliciting your contributions in the category of “citizen news.” What does that mean? Any non-fiction, short-form video you’ve created that tells a story about something out there in the universe.

Could be a documentary, could be a news spot, could be an interview, could be a cellphone-cam clip of an important event. Please keep it under five minutes and make sure you own the rights. We’re looking for compelling videos that showcase a unique perspective or analysis.

We’ll be judging the videos this month based on number of views, votes cast, and stars received on the NewTeeVee Pier Screenings site. So how do you submit? Upload your original video to the Pier Screenings site (directions here). The top six videos will be shown at the live event on August 29 on a large 16-foot outdoor screen at a pier in San Francisco. The live audience at the event will choose the top three winners for the night. Metacafe will promote the top three audience winners from the live event on its front page, and Fabrik will be giving away high capacity hard drives (think 1 terabyte).

The submission process is rolling, so submit early to increase the possibility of people seeing, liking, and starring your video. To sweeten the deal, our platinum sponsor, Friction.tv, will mail out promo packs for first 30 videos submitted. The packs include a webcam for you to create more citizen news videos and two Friction.tv t-shirts.

Don’t forget to RSVP for the event on Eventbrite. And if you’d like to join Metacafe, Friction.tv, Fabrik, and vod:pod in sponsoring the event, please contact Joanne Wan (joey at gigaom dot com).

Pier Screenings Broadcast Round the World

VeodiaThe newest installment of NewTeeVee’s Pier Screenings series is coming up next Tuesday, July 24, and we’re bringing the show on the road…kind-of. We will be streaming the event live for the first time using Veodia’s video broadcasting service. Craig recently covered Veodia and liked it enough that we thought we’d give it a try ourselves. Veodia’s browser-based service enables anyone with a camera, computer, and connection to broadcast high-quality video over the net. Join us next Tuesday on Veodia if you can’t be here in person.

For those of you who haven’t registered yet, we have some more incentive for you to RSVP now. We have new sponsors and a bunch of great raffle prizes for attendees.

  • First up, we have VideoClix joining as a Gold sponsor. VideoClix is a monetization solution based on hypervideo. It allows viewers to click on objects in video and purchase products, cast votes, and get more info on the clicked items without having to stop the video. VideoClix will be giving away a one-year license to its tools valued at $5000 at the Pier Screening.
  • Next up, Kiptronic has been added as a Silver sponsor. Kiptronic has built a technology for rich media content publishers that provides automated ad insertion and campaign management services for downloadable media.
  • Our series-long sponsors are also kicking in some more raffle prizes. Fabrik will be raffling off three large SimpleTech drives — 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB. Our co-host, Metacafe, also has some cool schwag in the works.
  • Music at the event will be provided by Om Records. They’ll also be on hand giving out CD compilations to guests.
  • And last but not least, a big thanks to vod:pod for being a long-time Fan of NewTeeVee.

So, go vote on the Pier Screenings site and come see your favorite videos live in person or on broadcast.

June NewTeeVee Pier Screenings: The Theme Is Parody

Moonlight shining on the water, web video shining on the screen.

NewTeeVee Screenings at the Pier

The NewTeeVee team is psyched to continue our outdoor screenings summer series, the NewTeeVee Pier Screenings. What better way to have a good time watching online videos on a huge 16-foot outdoor screen than with a twist on old favorites? So, we’re announcing the theme for the June 19th Pier Screening…. (drumroll) …parody. We have opened up a new round of submissions on the dedicated Pier Screenings community site.

Our idea of what qualifies as parody video is pretty broad — from mashups to fan-made music videos to remakes. Think “Brokeback to the Future,” lip dub, or Angry Alien.

You don’t have to make anything special for the contest — prior projects are welcome. But please keep it under five minutes and don’t submit anyone else’s work. We will be screening uploads this time around to make sure you’re riffing on this theme — and also to make sure you’re not employing egregious amounts of copyrighted content.

If your video makes to the final round shown at the Pier Screening on June 19, you have a chance to win the Metacafe Prize for Best Audience-Voted Video. The live audience at the event will choose the top three winners for the night. Metacafe will promote the top three audience winners from the live event on its front page. This will help content creators get exposure as well as some dough – you can expect big page views from getting featured, and the company pays $5 for every 1,000 views.

For more details on how to submit your videos and what prizes are in store for the winners, visit the NewTeeVee Pier Screenings site and Liz Gannes’ previous post. Also, don’t forget to RSVP on Eventbrite to attend the Pier Screening on June 19. We’ll have heat lamps this time, as well as a popcorn machine, beer, and other movie theater fare.

A big thank you to all the sponsors which make the June 19 Pier Screening possible:

NewTeeVee has set up a Pier Screenings website to determine the six videos that will be in the running for the Metacafe prize. The live audience at the event will choose the top three winners for the night. The first-place winner will receive 7 days of in the promotional rotation on the Metacafe front page, the second-place winner will receive 4 days, and the third-place winner one day.
